The Horsefly River is famous for its fly-fishing and has the second largest sockeye salmon run in B.C. Horsefly Lake, one of B.C.’s larger lakes is perfect for fishing and water sports. The area has many resorts for fishing, hunting, canoeing, kayaking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and many other activities.
LIKELY: is north of Horsefly on a gravel road, 85km northeast of 150 Mile House on a paved road. Surrounding Likely is derelict mine sites and ghost towns; Keithley Creek, Cedar Creek, Spanish Village and the remnants of Quesnel Forks, once a bustling community of 5,000. One of the world’s largest man-made canyons can be seen 4km past Likely on Sharpe Road in the form of Bullion Pit...a by-product of early mining techniques. Likely is an excellent fishing destination, the Quesnel River is renowned for its fly-fishing, while the lake yields popular trout species. Quesnel Lake, 100km long, is the longest lake in the Cariboo. Canoeing, bird watching, wildlife viewing, hiking, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling are popular.
QUESNEL LAKE: Quesnel Lake hosts char, Dolly Varden, Kokanee and unique Gerard rainbows, known to reach 17 pounds. The Lake claims the title “World’s Deepest Fiord Lake” – its East Arm has been sounded to nearly 2000 feet! At the edge of the park chain formed by Bowron Lakes, Cariboo Mountains and Wells Gray Parks, Quesnel Lake has plenty of room for boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and exploring along its main length of 101 km (63 miles) and its 45 km long North Arm. It even has its own Niagara Falls.
The Quesnel River provides excellent fly and lures fishing, kayaking, river rafting, canoeing, and gold panning. The Horsefly River salmon run occurs mid-August to mid-October, and you can watch the salmon from the Likely Bridge.
WILLIAMS LAKE: 10,385) It is the fastest growing community in the Cariboo. The famous Williams Lake Stampede, a four-day event over the July 1 weekend, was officially started in the 1920’s, and is now a major professional rodeo. This community has a diversified economic base, with forestry, mining, and agriculture; and the most active stockyard in the province. As a gateway to the Chilcotin, Williams Lake is within close proximity to many guest ranches, resorts, historical sites and untouched wilderness, offering limitless recreational opportunities. Access: Driving north on Highway 97, turn right just past 150 Mile House at the sign to Likely and Horsefly. Drive approximate stay right on the road to Horsefly After approximately 35 KMs turn right onto Bells Lake Road.
Recreation: Activities offered include hiking, hunting, cross country ski, snowmobiling, riding, boating, exploring and fishing. This area offer large, deep lakes and is usually fished on a troll - included are a number of smaller lakes (one of them in front of your new home) excellent for fly-fishing. Fishing for rainbow trout is a favourite pastime of many visitors. The Horsefly River is also a Mecca for the fly fisher man.
